Turning challenges into change: Why I started Penny

I’m often asked, “Why Penny?” The truth is; there’s isn’t a single answer.

It’s a combination of personal experience and countless conversations revealing a frustrating reality: too many women lack financial confidence, especially when facing big decisions like buying your first home and investing toward wealth building.

Over the years, I’ve noticed some recurring challenges women face when it comes to money:

  • Women struggling to save due to lower salaries, caring commitments or interrupted savings;
  • Women relying on partners or family for financial advice because they lack confidence in their own financial knowledge; and
  • Women feeling overwhelmed by big financial decisions like investing and buying a home.

Every woman deserves to feel empowered financially, but existing financial platforms often fail to provide the support and resources women truly want. Penny is here to change that.

Even within my own team, I’ve seen these struggles firsthand. One team member lost thousands to an investment scam, while another nearly gave up her dream of home ownership because she was so intimidated by the process.

And then there’s my own journey. After graduating from Uni, I found myself with $100,000 in student debt, trying to find work in the middle of a global financial crisis. That debt wasn’t just a number—it shaped every decision I made, including staying in a relationship long after it had run its course. It shouldn’t have to be this way.

The bigger problem

We often talk about the gender pay gap and the superannuation gap, but there’s a larger issue at play: women aren’t receiving the financial education, support, or confidence they need to take control of their futures.

The result? Women have less wealth than men. This makes financial independence, home ownership, and investing feel out of reach. This is especially true for young women navigating the home buying process—many feel confused about the first steps to buying a house, unsure of their options, and like they’re constantly trying to catch up.

Penny isn’t just a financial tool; it’s a movement.

That’s why I created Penny

It’s about changing how we, as women, approach money—by building financial knowledge, confidence, and community. Penny is here to simplify complex financial decisions, demystify home ownership, and provide women with the tools they need to achieve financial independence.

Because having control over your money means having control over your choices.

I hope Penny inspires you to feel more confident in your financial journey—and, ultimately, in your future.
