Championing women in finance through action, advocacy, and community

Buying your first home isn’t just a financial decision, it’s a step toward independence, stability, and building the life you want. But for many women, the process can feel daunting, especially when navigating an industry that often hasn’t been built with them in mind.

As part of Penny’s “Share the Knowledge” campaign, we’re bringing you  insights from trusted partners who are passionate about helping women take control of their financial futures. In this edition, we asked Tanya Sale, CEO and Co-Founder of outsource Financial about her journey to leadership, why she started outsource, and her tips for women thinking about buying a home.

Breaking ground and barriers: Tanya’s journey into leadership

Tanya started out in the finance industry when being a woman in the room was still a rarity. She began her career at Colonial First State before moving into broking when it was still a new and evolving space. Facing the challenges of a male-dominated industry, she relied on resilience, instinct, and integrity to carve her path.

“I’ve always believed that authenticity is your greatest strength.” Tanya Sale

In 2010, Tanya co-founded outsource Financial with Andrea Tassis to create a broker-focused, values-led alternative to the traditional aggregator model; one that puts people first. From the start, the vision was clear: support brokers in building successful, independent businesses and deliver genuine, human-first support for clients.

With over 30 years in the industry, Tanya is the only female CEO of a mortgage aggregator in Australia. She and her team are committed to building a more supportive and inclusive path into homeownership, one that puts education, values, and people at the centre.

Practical ways outsource Financial is supporting women

At outsource Financial, Tanya and her team recognise that women in finance often face a different set of challenges – whether it’s safety concerns when meeting clients, juggling family responsibilities, or simply not seeing enough female role models in leadership. That’s why they’ve made it a priority to create real, practical support for women working in, and navigating, the world of finance with:

  • Free client meeting spaces in Sydney and Melbourne for safe, professional appointments
  • OWN: outsource Women’s Network – a peer-led space for connection, mentorship, and growth
  • Flexible digital mentoring programs in residential, commercial, and asset finance to support women balancing business and family

As Tanya says: “representation matters. As a female CEO, I take that responsibility seriously. We’re here to make sure women in finance feel seen, supported, and set up to succeed.”

These efforts also extend to the everyday buyer, ensuring that women have access to brokers who listen, educate, and support every step of the way.

Why Tanya supports Penny’s mission

When asked why she chose to partner with Penny, Tanya says: “The partnership between Penny and outsource Financial was a natural fit.

Jemi is doing amazing work helping women navigate the home ownership journey with confidence, and that mission really resonated with us.

We knew we could support that by connecting her audience with brokers who truly understand the unique financial challenges women face. It’s not just about getting a loan – it’s about building long-term financial wellbeing.”

“Together, we’re creating a space where women feel informed, empowered, and supported every step of the way. It’s a partnership I’m incredibly proud of.”

At outsource, Tanya and her team are committed to building financial literacy and creating access to brokers who understand women’s lived realities from career breaks to single incomes and non-linear financial paths.

Tanya’s top 5 home buying tips for women

We also asked Tanya what guidance she would give women thinking about home ownership. These are her 5 tips for feeling more confident, informed and in control, throughout the process:

1. Know your numbers

Get clear on your income, expenses, savings, and credit score. This will help determine what you can realistically borrow and afford, and avoid overcommitting.

2. Set your property goals

Ask yourself: is this your forever home, your first step onto the property ladder, or an investment? Your goal should shape your loan, location, and timeframe.

3. Budget for more than the deposit

Don’t forget about upfront costs like stamp duty, legal fees, and moving costs. A good buffer will give you peace of mind.

4. Get the right support

A broker who understands your lifestyle and goals can guide you through the process, help you compare loans, and save you time (and money).

5. Trust yourself

You don’t need to know everything on day one. Take it one step at a time, and lean on professionals and platforms that genuinely have your back.

Looking ahead, Tanya and her team are focused on expanding their learning and development programs and growing the OWN community.

They are also excited to deepen partnerships, like the one with Penny, to reach more first-home buyers and financially empower more women across Australia.

“Every broker we support, every client we help – it’s a reminder of why we started outsource in the first place.”
